Women typically don't hit on men. They do flirt and send signals that they are interested. This seems like a signal to me. If it were me, I would have thought you creating an opportunity for me to work up the courage to ask you out. Don't get upset if men misinterpret your signals. Regardless, they could have responded a little more gracefully.

It's not that different with women. Many women can also be unkind when rejecting romantic gestures (I know, it wasn't a romantic gesture, but they thought it was). If anything, you should use this as an opportunity to empathize with men. We typically risk rejection more often.
