This is what I currently do and it works. I've been married for 20 years hand have two kids. It would have never happened if my wife had told me she would never chip in during dating. Chipping in doesn't mean you necessarily pay half. You pay what you can afford. It sends a message that you will share the burden and you aren't out to take advantage of his generosity. It is generosity to pay for someone's expenses.
