Thanks for writing this. I have enjoyed having women as colleagues in tech. I do have some nuanced opinions about somethings that you wrote. I'm responding, not to disagree with the primary premise of your article, but to express my opinion (for what it's worth)
3% pay gap is pretty damned close to parity. I agree that companies shouldn't hire women simply to pay less, but women have to negotiate higher salaries and ask for promotions. At the same time, companies should monitor their wage gap and make adjustments.
Companies are better off when women act like women.
Companies will get better women employees if they provide support for maternity. However, a 1 to 2 year leave will affect anyone's career and that's an industry thing, not a company thing. As a technologist, I have to constantly study and research emerging technologies to stay relevant and marketable. At my level, it's a requirement and 2 years off from that will kill my career too. Such is the nature of technology.
Harassment at work is not ok. Companies need to have a proactive anti-harassment policy if they want to attract the best women employees.
