For me personally, it was never about disrespecting women. It was the feeling of personal responsibility for making sure there was enough money for my family. My wife never expected me to be a provider, but she also never felt the pressure I felt to earn. In the same way, I never expected her to perform all of the emotional labor she performs, but I never felt the pressure to make sure all of that stuff gets done. I think it goes way past teaching, it's ingrained in our society.
