I'm glad that guy responded to you and I'm glad you were receptive. I'm married, but if I wasn't and I was single would probably pay for the first date. However I wouldn't necessarily be doing it chivalrously, I would be doing it to comply with social expectations. I hate that, but there it is. Men pay. It's a bitter pill to swallow. It would be so much sweeter if it wasn't expected.

Ideally, I think we (men or women) should pay for something when we are with someone we know and love, not almost complete stranger. We should do it because it's a demonstration of affection, not compliance with a societal norm or any expectation in return.
