In my opinion, if he knows that you're unemployed, then he shouldn't be expecting you to offer to pay. Again, shaming the poor is bad behavior.

Something to consider though, when men are unemployed there usually isn't any dating at all. It's a trifecta of shit: financial stress, low self esteem and loneliness.
