I frequently asked my grandmother on my father's side about our ancestors. "We come from Gypsies" is all she would say. I thought she was joking as I thought a Gypsy was a stereotype, not a ethnicity. I should have pressed her on what she meant. I now know she was referring to Irish Travellers (the other Gypsy). While my ancestry is not related to the Romani, whenever I see them depicted in popular culture, I kind of feel a kinship with them.
