He's an alcoholic plain and simple. The problem isn't that he's irresponsible or lacks discipline. He cannot control his drinking. You shouldn't put up with it. You are right to put as much space between you and him. However, you might at least pity the poor man. He needs help and if he doesn't get it he'll end up institutionalized or dead. This isn't something unique to men either.
