Great article. Your perspective on money and romance is very close to mine. I think it's ok for men to pay on the first couple of dates, but I think dutch is OK too. Actually, I think dutch is best. However, due to social norms and competition, it's not practical for men to suggest it. In fact, it's a good idea for men to decline an offer to split, and acquiesce if they insist. I know it sounds stupid, but I believe men are expected to decline the offer.
In long term relationships, couples should certainly share the expenses of dating. My message to my son is, "A woman who is unwilling to share the expenses of dating is not likely to be willing to share the expenses of living." That goes the other way too.
