For most younger men (early 20's), relative financial stability is a pipe dream. Establishing a career takes time. So, younger women will often target men that are a little older (at least old enough to have enough of a career to be financially stable). This excludes younger men from the dating scene, during their years where they have the strongest desire to date. I think this may be the cause of the some of the resentment that feeds the gold digger trope.
