But is it a good example of white male privilege? Privilege is power, right? In this case, does his power come from being white, or is it his broader social standing? As another commenter pointed out, there have been non-white and non-male award recipients that have broken the same rules without consequences. So how is this specifically an example of male white privilege? If it is male white privilege, then I would have it too, right? Is this really teaching us what white privilege is? I have observed more than a few instances where white privilege and class privilege are confused.
Here are some things that look like white privilege to me:
* I can if I wish arrange to be in the company of people of my race most of the time.
* If I should need to move, I can be pretty sure of renting or purchasing housing in an area which I can afford and in which I would want to live.
* I can be pretty sure that my neighbours in such a location will be neutral or pleasant to me.
* I can go shopping alone most of the time, pretty well assured that I will not be followed or harassed.
I think it's erroneous to characterize every misdeed that a white man is able to perpetrate without consequence as evidence of white privilege. It's only white privilege if other white people have the same privilege and non-white people do not.
BTW, why should it matter to me that a white guy posted this article? More importantly, why did it matter enough to you to point it out?
