The developer should consider the pros and cons, the trade offs between an existing pattern and the new one and decide if the new pattern solves an issue or if it's simply another way of doing the same thing. They should consider whether the new pattern introduces new problems or challenges. However, none of this happens if the developer isn't even looking at new things.
